MTR DC A14
By FluxRostrum - Posted on July 22nd, 2009
On August 14th, there will be a large protest against mountaintop removal. The EPA has handed out several permits for this practice.
For those of you who don't know, mountaintop removal is the practice of blowing up the upper part of an entire mountain for coal. This destroys all the life on a mountain and poisons both our water and air with carcinogens and heavy metals. The environmental protection agency should not be handing out Mountaintop removal permits.
We will be at the EPA headquarters handing out information and making noise.

“Obama and the EPA are turning a blind eye to over 1,200 miles of demolished Appalachian streams, more than 500 flattened Appalachian mountains, and hundreds of communities under daily threat of failing coal sludge dams and massive flooding from excess rain run-off,” Tanya Turner, EPA National Day of Action organizer, said. “This is an Appalachian Apocalypse. We must end mountaintop-removal now.”
Mountain Justice organizers seek to raise awareness of the Obama administration's approval, under EPA chief Lisa Jackson, of MTR permits that violate the Clean Water Act and various other environmental laws.
Concerned citizens and coalfield residents cite numerous “appeasements” of the coal industry, in spite of Obama's campaign rhetoric opposing the destructive practice. These include continued permits for dumping hazardous mining waste into streams and valleys, weakening mining regulations intended to protect waterways, and
appointing several former coal industry executives to regulatory positions.
You
are encouraged to attend any of these actions to display your outrage as American citizens, who may even have voted for our president, to Obama’s lack of concern for Appalachian environmental and human rights.
solidarity,
