| NEW YORK, July 6, 2012--It's the sixth day of the heat wave and of Con Edison's hard line lock-out of 8.500 union workers on the eve of their 4-year contract renewal July 1. These mostly front line workers who cope with power failures and outages, often exposed to considerable danger, are from Local 1-2, Utility Workers Union of America. Their health benefits were cut off two days after the lock out. At the Union Square picket line, Dwight, a Con Ed mechanic for 32 years, explains the changes in the contract sought by management that led to a breakdown in contract negotiations last week. At the union HQ in WestChester, management-labor talks resumed on Thursday and are hopefully progressing with the thermometer expected to hit 100 degrees F in the city tomorrow. A report sourced from a union official: the death of one of the three replacement managers suffering from work-related injures since the lock out. Filmed by Liza Béar, Squaring Off.
