NEW YORK, June 28, 2010--At 6:30am this morning Johnnie Stevens, a founder of CLUPJS and Debbie [surname TK}, president of the Mid-Hudson branch of APWU and a hunger striker, held a press conference in front of the James A Farley general post office in Manhattan before the caravan of supporters took off for DC to join the other hunger strikers, now in the fourth day of their fast at 475 L'Enfant Plaza and the US Capitol. The caravan originated in Newburgh, NY at 4am. Other events planned for today include a protest outside the offices of The Washington Post and a possible citizen's arrest of Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe. The hunger strike has been staged to dramatize the fact that Congress is literally starving the post office of funds through its enforcement of the PAEA act of 2006. requiring 75 years of prefunding of retiree benefits. The strike was called by CLUPJS, a community/labor group formed independently of the unions. They are demanding a repeal of the prefunding mandate, refund of the $13 billion overpayment in 2011, an end to cuts and closures and a maintenance of service standards. ie no abolishing overnight single piece first class mail delivery, due to go into effect on July 1.
