| NEW YORK, September 6, 2012-- The two protesters arrested this morning for trespassing on the Spectra pipeline construction site returned for the evening rally to join a much larger group demanding that the Spectra pipeline be closed. The pipe is currently under construction at Gansevoort Street and the West Side Highway. The rally was organized by Occupy the Pipeline, a coalition of environmental groups, as one of a series of ongoing protests. The group supports renewable energy and is opposed to hydrofracking in the Marcellus Shale, which extends across New York State, Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia. Today's two rallies targeted the Spectra pipeline carrying fracked gas into New York City. Fracked gas is potentially radioactive because it contains radon; its half-life is 3 1/2 days. In addition, 596 toxic chemicals are used in the fracking process and gas pipelines are subject to frequent explosions.
